Some people, you know them well, never have a scratch, scuff or hint of dirt on their shoes. I can’t claim to be amongst them – almost every piece of clothing I have is covered in paint; even my smart stuff.
I can think of a few people, some of them artists, who never have even the vaguest notion of being anything other than ‘fresh to death’. Across the big wide world of street art, it’s no surprise that, fashion has had an impact on the art itself. We’ve seen fashion brands and classic hip-hop styles seep into walls on numerous occasions.
It’s quite strange because, although some street artists are very anti-brand, graffiti has been traditionally a lot less so. That’s partly because the roots of hip-hop were very aspirational and the culture is competitive – being the big cheese goes hand in hand with looking like the big cheese.
We’ve picked out a number of photos from deep in the Global Street Art archives where shoes, specifically shoes, have been painted on walls. Not t-shirts, not bow ties, not fourteenth century suits of armour but shoes. Kicks, trainers, sneakers, treads and creps (if you’re from London).
If you are an artist and you err on the side of fresh, then you might be interested in having your own line of shoes because, if you’re going to make a statement, one sure fire way is to rock up wearing your own trainers. Most people go the custom route, and we know a number of artists who customize their own shoes and who make custom shoes for others.
So if you’re already customizing shoes, if you want to wear your own design or if you just want to put your work out there, enter a competition, and maybe win a wad of cash, then this may be right up your well-trodden street.
Cali-based DC Shoes, often known for their chunky skater kicks, have just launched a new competition with Talenthouse. I’ve had pairs of DC Shoes before and I hope they send us some samples – it’s about time we got some sponsorship (cough, cough).
Anyway, back to the competition, it’s pretty simple really, if you’re up for it, DC is asking you to custom design a pair of the new DC Trase shoe.
Jump online and grab the template and then let rip like your pens could self -destruct at any given moment. DC will pick a numero uno winner, who takes home $10,000. The winner will go on sale at dcshoes.com and other retailers. You’ll be able to blag a few pairs for yourself too, plus there’s a free all expenses paid trip to the moon. OK, not the moon bit.
Because its Talenthouse, they have solid judges too, including the DC Shoes Global Director of Men’s Shoes, aka The Grand High Sole Overlord and a ludicrously talented skateboarder who is quite literally less than half my age. If you win, make sure you hit them up. It couldn’t hurt!
DC may also pick additional winners and make their shoes too. Those artists, plus the ‘people’s favourite’ picked by the Talenthouse community, will each win $2,500. For more information and to check out the full rules, click here. It’s all pretty simple – so if the shoe fits, design it!
